Thinking of buying a new boiler? Not sure the boiler you have is right for you? Know nothing about boilers at all?

Combination Boiler:

The combination boiler, commonly referred to as a combi boiler, is the most popular boiler type in the UK. Designed to provide both heating and hot water without the need for bulky water tanks or cylinders, combi boilers are an excellent solution for homes with limited space. These boilers heat water on demand, ensuring hot water is available whenever required.

However, one drawback is that the water pressure may decrease when multiple taps are used simultaneously. For instance, using a shower while someone else is washing dishes may reduce the water pressure. Additionally, since all the components are housed within a compact unit, combi boilers may experience more frequent technical issues compared to other types of boilers. We’ll discuss preventive measures later.

Conventional Boiler:

Conventional boilers, also known as heat-only, open-vent, or regular boilers, are a more traditional form of heating in the UK. While they have become less popular due to the rise of combi boilers, they still offer distinct advantages, especially for larger households. With a conventional boiler, hot water is stored in a cylinder, allowing you to draw water from multiple taps simultaneously without a loss in pressure.

However, this system requires sufficient space for the cylinder and other components, making it less ideal for homes with limited room. Another limitation is that conventional boilers do not provide hot water on demand—you can only use the pre-heated water stored in the cylinder. Once that water is depleted, you’ll need to wait for more to heat up.

Conventional boilers work well in older homes and low-pressure areas, where gravity-fed systems offer better performance than mains-fed systems. If your home already has a conventional setup, upgrading to a new boiler of the same type can be more cost-effective and less disruptive since it avoids extensive pipework changes and accommodates existing radiators better.

System Boiler:

A system boiler offers a middle ground between combi and conventional boilers. Like a conventional boiler, it uses a water cylinder, but it eliminates the need for a separate water tank, making it a more space-efficient solution. This system can supply hot water to multiple taps simultaneously while maintaining higher water pressure, a feature that combi boilers lack.

Although system boilers are more compact than conventional ones, you will still need to allocate space for the water cylinder, typically in an airing cupboard. If your home has limited space, this may not be the most practical choice.

Similar to conventional boilers, system boilers do not provide instant hot water, and the supply can run out, requiring time to reheat. It’s advisable to set a timer based on your household’s hot water needs, ensuring that the water is ready when needed. The size of your water cylinder and your household’s usage will determine whether you have sufficient hot water at all times.
